Brothers Day: A Donor Sister’s Time for Celebratory Reflection

Brothers Day

“Brother and sister, together as friends, ready to face whatever life sends. Joy and laughter or tears and strife, holding hands tightly as we dance through life.” – Suzie Huitt

I never knew my brother was my best friend. I never knew that a day would come that I would have to face life without him. You see, since the day I was born, he was always there. Bryan was there to hold my hand. He was there to teach me wrong from right – like not to throw fits in the grocery store with dad.

He was there to share my secrets and protect my heart. He never took it easy on me (because if you can’t play with the big dogs, stay off the court) and always was the first to help me whenever I needed it – especially when it came to calculus.

Days like today are hard. They weigh heavy on your heart and become a reminder of loss, grief and pain. But, they are also beautiful. Since the death of my big brother, I have learned to find beauty in the moments of reflection. Today is a day to reflect. Today is a day to celebrate. Even if Bryan is no longer here, I am choosing to stand tall and remind those close to me that Bryan is still my big brother. He will ALWAYS be my big brother.

Nothing can change the fact that for 24 years, I had a constant protector, a forever friend and someone who loved me unconditionally. To this day, Bryan is still impacting my life in ways only a big brother can. He is guiding me, protecting me and always reminds me that he is around when I need it most. What more could you ask for from a big brother?

Today is National Brothers Day and I am choosing to celebrate mine. Bryan Timothy Clauson, everything I am, you helped me to be. I love you infinity, B.
