engaging

with our community

building new bridges in the community

Our outreach efforts included presentations to new organizations, including at the National FFA Convention and Expo in Indianapolis, allowing us to share facts about organ and tissue donation and transplantation with more than 65,000 students in grades 8-12 from throughout the U.S. We were also the featured organization in this year’s Distributive Education Clubs of America competition. Students decided their topic would be organ donation and their project resulted in 1,500 interactions, providing donation education at high school sports games, assemblies and community events.

creating support for donation

Donation and transplantation are not possible without our hospital partners, coroner offices, funeral homes and other professionals.

Because their support makes donation possible, we believe it is our job to serve those professionals any way we can.

To that end, we implemented new initiatives to provide education and resources to nurses, respiratory therapists, physicians, coroners, funeral directors and others. This engagement has resulted in increased participation in the donation process.

Program Spotlight:
Bridging Language

When a family loses a loved one, and organ donation may be an option for that patient, a physician can help the family by introducing the idea of donation and bridging the conversation to an Indiana Donor Network coordinator. During a clinical trial at Indiana University Health Riley Hospital for Children, Indiana Donor Network and Riley physicians saw a nearly 30% increase in donor authorization when bridging language was used. In 2022, we rolled this program out statewide via online training for physicians to increase donor authorization and save more lives.

Her life is gone here, but let’s go save others.

– Minerva Coker, mother of donor hero Ayania

Ayania Coker tragically lost her life after she suffered a gunshot wound. Her mother, Minerva, who has fostered more than 100 children since the 1990s, took Ayania in when she was four months old and adopted her at age 8. Ayania saved the lives of a 22-year-old woman with the gift of her liver and a 64-year-old woman with the gift of her lungs.
