DONOR FAMILY MEMBERS SERVED

In 2022, 334 organ donor heroes and 1,267 tissue and cornea donor heroes gave the gift of life through Indiana Donor Network. Each of these donors and their families have brought hope and healing to grateful recipients. We are thankful to each one of them.

In 2022, we increased the number of organs transplanted by 18% compared to 2021. To achieve 1,116 organs transplanted, our team had to work harder than ever.

Our strategic initiatives contributing to this increase included:

Increasing the clinical capabilities of our Organ and Tissue Recovery Center including adding new kidney pumps and completing multiple organ recovery surgeries simultaneously.

Expanding professional education programs to provide critical information about donation to nurses, respiratory therapists and other hospital care team members.

Expanding marketing, communications and community outreach programs to sign up more than 960,000 additional Hoosiers as organ and tissue donors.

Launching a statewide physician partnership program to improve communication between hospital care teams, donor families, and Indiana Donor Network and increase donor authorization rates.

GAINING AUTHORIZATION FOR DONATION

In 2022, Indiana Donor Network increased authorization rates among the families of prospective donors. Of 281 families we approached whose loved ones were not registered donors, more than 53% authorized organ donation on behalf of their loved one, compared to 48% in 2021.

I don’t recall the lady’s name, but she expressed her condolences to me in a way that made me feel like she meant what she said. She expressed to me some humanity. My wife is not just a number; she matters.”

A BIGGER IMPACT TAKES A BIGGER TEAM

In order to best serve the families of donor heroes and those waiting on a lifesaving transplant, we had to grow our team.

In 2022, we added 45 team members for a total of 284 compared to only 171 in 2018.

Commitment to Quality

The team at Indiana Donor Network is committed to quality as evidenced by the percentage of staff who participate in a formal quality or process improvement event. In 2022, 100% of Indiana Donor Network team members participated in such an event to continuously improve our operations.

ORGAN AND TISSUE RECOVERY CENTER UPDATES

To increase our ability to successfully transplant organs recovered on-site and best serve donor families, we:

Increased utilization of kidney pumps by 17% over 2021.

Pioneered a new liver transporter clinical trial, creating the potential to transplant more livers to recipients in need.

Created the Bryan Clauson Legacy Suite to better serve donor families visiting their loved ones at our facility.

Bryan Clauson Legacy Suite

Made possible by Indiana Donor Network Foundation’s BC Legacy Fund, we opened the Bryan Clauson Legacy Suite, a one-of-a-kind intensive care room at Indiana Donor Network. The suite provides a private space for families to spend time with their loved one as preparations are made for them to become a donor hero.

EXPANDING TO THE EAST COAST

In 2022, TxJet – Indiana Donor Network’s subsidiary aviation company – flew more lifesaving organ transportation missions than in any year since its inception in 2014. To accommodate the increased demand for services from transplant centers and OPOs nationwide, TxJet opened a new base of operations in Raleigh, North Carolina. This new base allows us to better serve partners in the eastern and southeastern U.S.

THROUGH

DONATION

Tissue Team Highlight:
International Collaboration

In August, a gas explosion at a construction site in Auckland, New Zealand, left at least five people injured, four of whom had extensive burns. Indiana Donor Network tissue donor heroes provided skin grafts that helped save those victims’ lives.

Note: Tissue donor families always have the option of electing for their loved one’s gifts to remain in the U.S.
