2025 Scholarship Winner: Emma Murphy

September 2, 2025

INDIANAPOLIS – Emma Murphy, 25, of Indianapolis has been awarded a $1,000 educational scholarship from Indiana Donor Network Foundation.

Indiana Donor Network Foundation established its scholarship fund in 2005 to provide educational scholarships for family members of Indiana residents who are organ and tissue donors, living donors, transplant recipients or people waiting for lifesaving transplants.

Those selected as scholarship recipients often help raise awareness about the importance of organ and tissue donation in saving and healing lives.

This year, the Foundation awarded $25,000 in scholarships, made possible due to the generosity of financial contributions made by Indiana Donor Network employees and supporters of the Foundation.

Other 2025 scholarship recipients include Lainey Akins of Fishers ($7,000); Alyssa Heath of Wadesville and Elsa Estridge of Chesterton ($5,000); Allison Kirts of Newton, Illinois, and Katherine Fisher of Connersville ($3,000); and Sara Kamp-Austin of Crown Point ($1,000).

In the essay portion of her scholarship application, Murphy shared her connection to organ donation.

“My dad was diagnosed with high-grade glioblastoma, an aggressive and fatal brain cancer. He died in 2023,” Murphy wrote. “He was very clear with his loved ones that when it came to his end-of-life requests, one of the most important ones was that he be an organ and tissue donor and that his body be donated to give life to others or be used to assist with medical research.”

Already a hero in her eyes, Murphy said her father’s final act of love was to be a donor hero.

“Then earlier this year, my partner’s dad received a kidney transplant,” she continued. “Because of organ donation, he no longer must live a life restricted by daily kidney dialysis. Because of donation, three babies get to grow up knowing their grandfather. While my dad will not get to be at my wedding, because of organ donation my future father-in-law will get to be there. Because of organ donation, a good man gets more time.”

A graduate of North Central High School in Indianapolis, Murphy graduated Saint Louis University and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in social work.
