Supporting Families: No Matter the Outcome

young Bernadine
I can’t say enough wonderful things about the fine people who manage or volunteer at Indiana Donor Network. They contacted me the night Mom, pictured above, died (almost 3 months ago) and asked if our family would consent to organ or tissue donation. After a quick consult with my six awesome siblings, the answer was a resounding “yes.” The folks from Indiana Donor Network could not have been more compassionate and respectful. They clearly explained how things would be handled. Sadly, after an examination, Mom was unable to donate. However, Indiana Donor Network does not distinguish between actual donations and intended donations. The day before the funeral, a package arrived at my door. Inside, I found two beautiful wood memory boxes, donor medallions, books, and locks of Mom’s hair – all of it an expression of Indiana Donor Network’s gratitude and acknowledgement of our loss. They don’t forget about you after that, though…I received a gorgeous handmade throw blanket about a month later, and received a couple of calls and letters from Indiana Donor Network to make sure we were coping well. The point of all of this is NOT they sent awesome gifts. It is the recognition that this is an organization that understands how difficult and personal the decision to donate is – whether it is for yourself or someone you love – and the immeasurable impact a donation can have on a complete stranger’s ability to go on living. Tonight, I officially registered myself as a donor. You should, too! – Laura Lindenbusch, donor daughter
