Dr. James Guarrera and his transplant team at University Hospital in Newark, N.J., affiliated with Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, perform a liver transplant utilizing the LifePort Liver Transporter.  With machine perfusion, a donor liver can remain viable for transplant for up to 24 hours. Keeping a donor liver functioning after recovery allows more time to test and assess the organ’s health. It can also improve a liver’s function, making more donor livers available for transplant.
