September 23-27 is National DMV Appreciation Week 2019

INDIANAPOLIS (September 24, 2019) – This week, Donate Life Indiana and its partner organizations, Indiana Donor Network and VisionFirst, are celebrating their lifesaving partnership with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Donate Life America created National DMV Appreciation Week to recognize Driver’s License Partners (DLPs) as vital partners in saving and healing lives.

Almost 99 percent of Hoosiers who are registered organ, tissue and cornea donors registered their decision through their local BMV office. Because of this, the partnership between donation and transplantation organizations and the BMV is incredibly important.

Currently, about 75% of Indiana residents are registered donors. This makes Indiana one of the top 10 states in the nation for registration rates. Almost all of those registrations took place through the BMV.

To show appreciation, Donate Life Indiana is delivering 1,800 pairs of branded sunglasses to employees at 132 BMV offices across the state. These gifts were packed by volunteer advocates, many of whom are donor family members or transplant recipients.

Right now, more than 114,000 people nationwide are waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. 1,300 of these patient are Hoosiers. One donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation and heal up to 75 people through tissue and cornea donation.

Lindsey Johnson, Donate Life Indiana director, stated, “Our partners at the BMV are on the front lines of our effort to save lives through donation and transplantation. They ask one of the most important questions any of us can answer: ‘Do you want to register as a donor?’”
