INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Donor Network has named Dr. David W. Roe as its chief medical officer. In this role, Roe will oversee and coordinate organ donation for the organization, which serves as a vital link between donors and people waiting for lifesaving organ transplants.

Prior to being named chief medical officer, Roe served five years as Indiana Donor Network’s associate medical director, where he directed the care of donors statewide. Through his medical practice, he is a part of the pulmonary/critical care group at Indiana University Health North Hospital. Roe is also a past medical director of the IU Health lung transplant and ECMO programs.

Roe says the decision to work with Indiana Donor Network comes down to the people and the mission. “To maximize the gifts of donation, you have to have intense dedication, education and commitment, and I think that’s what the people who work at Indiana Donor Network have. The building blocks are in place to do great things in organ donation, and I’m looking forward to advancing them together.”

Roe takes over as chief medical officer during a time of growth for Indiana Donor Network. In May, the organization announced the opening of its Organ and Tissue Recovery Center. Fewer than 20% of the 58 organ procurement organizations in the U.S. have on-site organ recovery capabilities.

Indiana Donor Network President and CEO Kellie Hanner says Roe’s experience and vision will continue to elevate the organization. “Dr. Roe has been an invaluable resource for our organ recovery teams. Together, they will continue to save and heal many lives through donation and transplantation.”

Roe’s first day as chief medical officer was July 1. He succeeds longtime Indiana Donor Network Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tim E. Taber, who will serve as a consultant until the end of the year to support Roe in his transition.
