The pioneering Donor Hero Camp aims to support children of donor families on their grief journeys through pediatric bereavement interventions

INDIANAPOLIS (November 18, 2019) – Indiana Donor Network today announced a new weeklong Donor Hero Camp for children of donor families. This new camp is designed to support those children as they experience grief for the loss of their loved one who died and became a donor hero. The first annual camp is slated to begin in June 2020.

Children, grandchildren and siblings experience grief in unique ways. Grief literature describes children as “forgotten mourners,” because they are often not included in end of life decisions, hospital processes, final goodbye rituals, funeral ceremonies and death conversations. The Donor Hero Camp aims to address these issues for donor families and provide a healthy path forward for grieving children.

Located at Jameson Camp in Indianapolis, the new Donor Hero Camp will support children on their grief journeys through pediatric grief support interventions. These interventions will include therapeutic grief-focused activities, donation education, team activities and outdoor experiences.

A week of grief camp can allow a more effective and concentrated experience for children to accept their loss journeys, as compared to weekly therapy sessions.

This new program also offers a unique opportunity for the community to become involved in Indiana Donor Network’s donor family services. Indiana Donor Network intends to make the camp as affordable as possible for families, by raising funds through the Indiana Donor Network Angel Fund.
